Dance Movement  Psychotherapist

Sandplay Therapist

Hello I’m Sophie. I describe myself as an embodied and creative psychotherapist, because I like to be creative and work with props, symbols, storytelling, make believe, fantasy, dance, art, and I like to notice and ask you to notice what feelings, sensations are emerging with you in your body as we work together, in movement we can notice energy changes, how and where we move, how we like and don’t like to move as an example.

I come with a playful spirit, that connects with children and the child within adults and teens. Also with the older adults with brain aging issues and people with learning disabilities.

I take seriously our connection with each other, our environment and our spirituality.

I work both with individuals and groups.

My practice is much about collaboration, spontaneity and improvisation, if you have an idea, inspiration for an exploration, I want to hear about it. For example if you are a couple and would like to use movement or/and sandplay to explore your relationship I welcome you to get in touch.

As a dyslexic, I find writing and talking about what I offer, less easy than showing you. I am offering group taster sessions dotted about the year on different days and times. Please feel welcome to join one.

I have worked for a number of therapeutic organisations over the years in the UK. I continue to learn and develop my skills.

I am an accredited and registered DMP with ADMPUK and UKCP. I have completed a minimum of 160 personal psychotherapy hours. I know well the path of stepping into and staying in therapy.

My practice is supervised by qualified psychotherapy supervisors. This means I meet for regular support to reflect on my work in a safe confidential professional relationship.

What Does a Dance Movement Psychotherapist do?

A DMP supports people as a whole physical and mental human being. People are offered a room that they can move about in, the opportunity to move with or without music. The use of therapeutic props, such as pompoms and colourful fabrics. People are encouraged to explore and dream into their creative metaphors. To develop and explore their self witness, they are supported to be seen. They are welcome to talk about what may be coming up for them in exploring in these ways. People are invited and shown various activities which over a number of sessions they will choose what they would like to do. They are free to invent activities, to play, build, make and be. There is no wrong way to approach DMP. Anyone is welcome and it works for people of all capacities and ages.

For more information on the benefits see ADMP

What Does a Sandplay Therapist do?

Sandplay therapy is an especially gentle way of accessing unconscious memories and feelings. It works particularly well as a therapeutic method with children, young people and adults who struggle to express themselves verbally. It also offers those who can express themselves verbally well, to explore aspects of themselves without reaching for words first.

Sandplay therapy can offer an embodied experience, if you work with the sand. The therapist may explore with you any feelings you notice in your body whilst working with your tray.

Sandtray creations can offer information for people to talk about.

Sandplay therapists, will support a person quietly. Inviting a person to use the tray, to choose from a selection of symbols to work with in the sand. The therapist will stay quiet while someone is working. Some people want to talk with their therapist while working, others may remain silent and wait until they feel they have completed before speaking with the therapist.

Sandplay therapy is trauma informed. It offers a chance to self regulate, to ground, to be creative and playful, to let go of what needs to be let go of. To bring forth what might be waiting to surface. To be witnessed, accompanied. It is a gentle practice and you cannot do it wrong
